Description

Peterborough’s free summer concert series continues on Wednesday July 8th with Calypso Rose and Kobo Town! Come out to Del Crary Park to experience the amazing music from the “Calypso Queen” and Kobo Town in person.
Calypso Rose has been writing music for the better part of 60 years, Calypso music (a combination of Mento, Ska, Spouge, and Soca), as you might have guessed and has received more honors and medals than any other living Calypsonian. Garnering the “Calypso Queen” mantle five straight years in the mid-70’s, Rose had major hits with “Constable Rose” and “Do Dem Back”, her first gold disc and has shared the stage with such international stars as Miriam Makeba, Tito Puente, Mahalia Jackson, Michael Jackson, Roberta Flack, and Bob Marley.
Kobo Town
Founded by Trinidadian/Canadian songwriter Drew Gonsalves, Kobo Town is named after the historic neighborhood in Port-of-Spain where calypso music was born, a site of constant defiance and conflict. Traditionalists were skeptical of the new elements Gonsalves included in his music. “I’m not sure I should call it calypso,” he says. “It is calypso inspired and derived, but it’s a conscious departure from the way it developed back home…For me, the calypsonian is a singing newspaperman commenting on the events of the day, with an attitude halfway between court jester and griot.”
